At the end of the 1940s, the French Navy thought of equipping itself with escorts more or less derived from the US-DE "Cannon" class destroyer escorts, fourteen of which equipped the French Navy. The preliminary project shows a unit equipped with a flush-deck hull as on the US-DE but with some elements inspired by the British "Rivers" also used by our French Navy in six examples. The initial 1948 project provided for an armament consisting of a 105 mm gun at the rear, two quadruple 40 mm mounts quickly replaced by two double mounts of 57 mm Bofors guns in the open air, four 20 mm Oerlikons, one or two wake grenades with a cut-out of the forward superstructures offering the possibility of installing triple mounts of torpedo tubes at a later date. Finally, the configuration adopted was three twin 57 mm/60 remote-controlled ACAD model 1951 mounts under turrets, two 20 mm Oerlikons, four triple mounts of 550 mm torpedo tubes and a 375 mm Bofors Mle 54 six-fold rocket launcher. In 1949, two units, the C 1 and C 2, were quickly ordered followed by the C 3 and C4.
