The Legend of the Tugboat Hercules
During her early years of service, the Hercules was operating as an ocean-going tug. Due to sales from the northwest, sailing ships often used the Hercules on voyages north via the San Francisco coast.
In the past, the Hercules was used for the re-ferrying of boats to various destinations on the west side of the United States, Hawaii, and also in the transport of raw material for the construction of the Panama Canal.
In 1947, the tugs Hercules and Monarch were taken to tow the helmet of the ship Oklahoma to San Francisco Bay, to destroy it. Unfortunately, as they passed through Hawaii, a terrifying storm nearly collapsed them, but the Hercules broke free before disappearing along with Oklahoma.
In 1986, it was designated as a national monument. Now it remains moored at the Hyde Street Wharf, in the National Historical Park, and has become a very important landmark.
