“Gold glittered on the prows and silver shimmered on every ship. The fleet was magnificent, and if the leader had wished to conquer entire peoples, the mere sight of his ships would have been enough to terrify the enemy.” Christened “Ormen Lange” (Long Serpent) by King Olaf Tryggvesso, the longship was the most famous warship of its time. Adorned with a dragon's head figurehead, it could reach considerable dimensions (up to 48 meters in length).

Protected by very high railings, with rows of superimposed planks, the longship had to be light and extremely maneuverable.
