Tuna fishing requires sturdy, seaworthy, and reasonably fast boats. After several trials, the current boat design was determined. It had been observed that the vessels tested were either too heavy or too small, such as the sloops of around twenty tons. The "Marie-Jeanne" is a Dundee of 50 to 60 tons; it has a large sail area and a crew of about twelve men. The scale model was built according to the original plans. All the wooden parts were laser-cut.
