The French Blériot XI was the most iconic single-seater aircraft of the pioneering era of aviation. It became famous on July 25, 1909, when Louis Blériot successfully crossed the English Channel, between Calais and Dover, in 36 minutes and 30 seconds.
Designed by Louis Blériot and Raymond Saulnier, the Blériot XI was a light and slender monoplane, constructed of oak and poplar wood. Its wings were fabric-covered. Despite its simplicity, the 25 hp, 3-cylinder Anzani engine ensured consistent operation.
Sporting achievements, robustness, functionality, and ease of piloting contributed to the success of this aircraft. It was aboard this type of aircraft that Captain Piazza carried out the first combat operations in aviation history, between 1911 and 1912, during the Libyan campaign.
