The Ford F-150 belongs to the Ford F-Series pickup family, a major player among North American utility vehicles. The 1979 Ranger XLT trim level gives the model a distinctly vintage look. The painted body features the characteristic boxy lines of this generation, with a separate grille, molded bumpers, mirrors, door handles, and windshield wipers. The clear windows and body details enhance the crawler's scale appearance.

The clipless body mounting system maintains clean exterior lines, with no visible studs. It also allows for quick body removal to access the chassis and electronics.

TRX-4 chassis: a base dedicated to off-roading

The TRX-4 Ford F-150 is built on an extended steel ladder frame chassis. This design replicates that of real off-road vehicles and provides a rigid base suitable for slow-speed maneuvers over rough terrain. The 336 mm wheelbase offers a realistic presence and good stability when navigating technical sections.

The four-wheel drive transmission is paired with a single-speed gearbox. Its differentials are permanently locked, ensuring each wheel receives the available torque—a feature particularly well-suited to crawlers when operating on uneven surfaces. The transmission incorporates steel gears and a slipper clutch designed to protect the drivetrain.

Portal axles are a key feature of the TRX-4. The wheel reduction system increases ground clearance without requiring excessively large tires. The TRX-4 Ford F-150 is equipped with GTS oil-filled shocks with threaded aluminum bodies. Ride height can be adjusted via spring preload. Canyon Trail tires mounted on 1.9-inch rims are designed to provide traction on uneven surfaces while maintaining proportions consistent with the 1979 pickup's body.

With a claimed 80 mm center ground clearance, the chassis can overcome rocks, roots, and slopes with greater clearance under the axles. Its 45° steering angle facilitates precise wheel placement on tight corners.

Electronics installed and 2.4 GHz radio

The crawler is equipped with a Traxxas Titan 21T 550-size brushed motor. A brushed motor is particularly well-suited to this discipline, where smooth low-speed acceleration and torque are more important than top speed. It is paired with the waterproof Traxxas XL-5 HV electronic speed control, compatible with 2S and 3S LiPo batteries as well as 6- or 7-cell NiMH packs.

The variator notably offers Trail and Crawl modes. Trail mode promotes smooth control around the neutral point, while Crawl mode activates neutral braking and direct reverse, useful for precisely controlling the vehicle on slopes or over rocks.

Steering is handled by a Traxxas 2075X waterproof digital servo with metal gears. The system is controlled by a Traxxas TQ 2.4 GHz wheel-type radio system, equipped with a two-channel transmitter and a three-channel receiver. The 2.4 GHz technology provides a reliable radio link suitable for radio-controlled model flying.
